Wrong Land Trust

Not all land trusts are created equal. Easement donors have found that some land trusts are confrontational, bureaucratic, inflexible or lack a realistic understanding of agriculture or forestry practices. Sometimes these problems escalate. The best insurance against picking the wrong land trust is to spend time on the front end developing rapport with land trust staff and working through easement terms.

It's also a good idea to check whether the land trust has been reviewed and received accreditation by the Land Trust Accreditation Commission (sponsored by the Land Trust Alliance) or has been certified by the State of Colorado. Those that have received such national or state certification are generally those that have the best standards of practice. It is possible to change the land trust holding a conservation easement, but only if that land trust agrees to the change.
